911 Emergency Dispatch

The Shelby Fire Department provides fire protection and first responder services, fire safety inspection and education to an

area that includes the Town of Shelby, the western part of the Town of Greenfield including St. Joseph Ridge, and the

southern part of the Town of Medary accessed from CTH F.

A salaried Fire Chief and 35 volunteer fire fighters and first responders provide round-the-clock protection.

Burn Permits for burning brush and Annual Fire Ring Permits for cooking or campfires outside of Goose Island Park are required

and available at the town hall. There are no permit fees.  Below is a copy of the permit application to burn brush

  • Permit valid only for address and date specified.
  • Allow the Fire Chief three working business days to approve the permit.
  • BRUSH ONLY (Do NOT burn tires, trash, paints, or any other hazardous and/or toxic materials.)
  • Only burn during day light hours. Fire to be attended at all times, never burn on windy days.
  • ALWAYS CALL DISPATCH CENTER BEFORE AND AFTER YOU BURN 785-5944.
  • IF A FIRE OCCURES CALL 911 IMMEDITEALY.
  • If unable to burn on the date the permit is issued for, please notify the Shelby Town Hall and request another date. A new date may be assigned up to seven days from the original burn date.
  • Material is to be burned in such a manner as to minimize the emission of smoke.
  • If burning creates a nuisance and complaints are received, you will be asked to put the fire out.
  • Violations of the burning ordinance are punishable by a fine of not less than $150.00.
  • Fire shall be controlled at all times, Permit holder shall be liable for cost of submission if fire is out of control. In the event the Permit holder does not cover the cost of submission there will be a Special Assessment place on to the Tax roll.

  • If burning creates a nuisance and complaints are received you will be asked to put the fire out.
  • Cooking fire rings must be at least fifty (50) feet from any building and in a ring no larger then two feet in diameter. Flames are not to exceed four feet in height.
  • The fire must be attended at all times. Violations of the burning ordinance are punishable by a fine of not less the $150.00.
  • IF A FIRE OCCURES CALL 911 IMMEDITEALY.
  • Material is to be burned in such a manner as to minimize the emission of smoke.
  • That the responsibility for damages or injuries is that of the applicant and in no way can the Town of Shelby or its agencies be held liable.
  • Should the fire get out of control and it becomes necessary to call the Fire Department, the cost of suppression will be the responsibility of the applicant.
  • An authorized fire department member may inspect all burning sites.
  • You must have the burning permit at the burn site during the burn.
  • Fire shall be controlled at all times, Permit holder shall be liable for cost of submission if fire is out of control. In the event the Permit holder does not cover the cost of submission there will be a Special Assessment place on to the Tax roll.
